    Hi Paul.

I’d like to thank you for your theme, it’s simple without all the bloated content that you find on most themes.

However, my site, https://www.marcusvaughan.com, takes ages to load, my web developer says its because there are several CSS and javascript files that need to be loaded before anything else can load. My web host says that my site needs to be optimized which is why I am reaching out to you…

    GTMetrix examined my website :

This page has 15 external Javascript scripts. Try combining them into one.
This page has 8 external stylesheets. Try combining them into one.

Im puzzled because your preview website for stills is super fast. It has the same number of css/javascript calls as mine, with no site optimization, it should be slow but isn’t. Are you using caching software here? Is there something that I am not doing?

If you can offer any advice i’d appreciate it. I have thought about combining css and javascript but it looks like a tedious and painful task.

    Cheers

Marcus, the demo of the theme works pretty fast regardless of all the stuff you’ve mentioned. This all actually is not as important as lazy loading. If I were you, I would start with the following:

    1. Make sure you’re using the version of the theme that supports lazy loading (Stills 1.3+). Turn it on (Jetpack > Settings > Performance > Enable Lazy Loading for images).

    2. Reduce the size of the gifs as much as possible.

    3. Make sure you are using a good hosting.

All these caching plugins, minified scripts, and other stuff — I don’t use it, and the demo runs fast. Just because of the lazy loading. “Minify your scripts and use caching” — is a generic site-bloating type of answer (imho).

    Regards,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,

    Thanks for your response.

I will look into the lazy loading that you recommend. I’m sure this will improve the experience for users when the site loads images.

For me the problem is the javascript/css calls which are bottle-necking at the start of the website load. The images will only load after the javascript has loaded. Sometimes it’s 20 seconds or more before I see the preloader spinning then I know the javascript has loaded…

Google now ranks websites based on their speed its really important that sites are optimized. They penalize sites that are slow. Take a look at Avada, there’s a reason why its the #1 best seller, apart from the design that is dated, what is going on behind the scenes is code efficient, they load one javascript file as an example.

I have another WordPress website running on my host server http://www.realdesigns.info, it is super fast so its not a problem with the host.

Can you let me know where I can start combining the javascript/css into 2 separate files please? I know this is a ball-ache for you but I really believe that it would offer a huge improvement on your website which I believe is one of the best, apart from this little issue.

BTW I used to sell a theme on themeforest and had over 1200 sales I appreciate the time that goes into building themes and I appreciate the time you have already spent on yours.

    Many thanks,

    Marcus
