    Hi:

    I have just set up a new wordpress site on pressable. I’ve got jetpack premium setup and activated. I have:

    * checked display galleries as cool mosaics
    * i’ve created a gallery using rectangular mosaic as the setting/shortcode

    However, it displays the gallery as a square mosaic for some reason.

    Lobster Rolls, Lobster Boat, Meatball Subs, and Secret Hitler

    I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong, and I suspect it’s how it’s interacting with the theme.

    I know this should work as in the demo theme, you do have tiled mosaic galleries that i believe are courtesy of jetpack.

    Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

    By the way, I am pretty sure that Essentialist is causing the issue as when i change the theme to 2017 the tiled mosaic works fine.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,

    The gallery layout with square tiles (that you are currently getting) comes from the theme, not from Jetpack. This is the theme’s way of interpreting WP’s native galleries. And Jetpack has its own way of interpreting the galleries. However, the theme has more priority and overrides Jetpack in this.

    To have Jetpack’s galleries in Essentialist, please go to functions.php in your theme folder and comment out the following line (should be around line 673) by changing this:

    add_filter('post_gallery', 'mauer_gallery', 10, 2);

    to this

    // add_filter('post_gallery', 'mauer_gallery', 10, 2);

    This should stop the theme from getting in the way with its own galleries.

    A little disclaimer: It’s best to do such modifications in a child theme, so they do not get overwritten during theme updates. However, of course you can always re-introduce them after a theme update.

    Regards,
    Paul

    Thanks Paul. This is SUPER helpful. BTW… i did try and make a child theme, but I couldn’t quite get it to work. I would be so grateful if you posted a quick child theme for essentialist that we could download. 🙂

    Hillel,

    Here is a really simple child theme for Essentialist: child theme. In case you need more info, here is the Codex documentation on child themes.

    If you enjoy the theme (or the support), I would really appreciate if you could rate it on ThemeForest. This literally takes a moment and actually helps a lot. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
    We’re also trying to override the theme gallery settings to use the Jetpack gallery.

    We added the code referenced above
    // add_filter('post_gallery', 'mauer_gallery', 10, 2);
    to the child functions.php file but it is still loading the Essentialist gallery and an error message (Jetpack’s Carousel has been disabled, because another plugin or your theme is overriding the [gallery] shortcode.)

    Any help you can provide would be wonderful!

    Thanks,
    Maura

    Hello Maura,

    The code for overriding the gallery function with a child theme is a bit different. Please use the following code:

    remove_filter('post_gallery', 'mauer_gallery', 10);

    Regards,
    Paul
