Important:
It's critical to install/update required plugins when you update themes.

Once you install and activate an updated theme, you are presented with a message similar to this (just like when you first installed the theme):

To ensure the correct work of your theme, it's critical to click the "Begin" links and install/update the plugins. If you have dismissed the message, you can get to the required/recommended plugins list by going to:

yoursite.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=tgmpa-install-plugins

If you are wondering why functionality is contained in plugins created by the same author who created the theme, please note that this is a ThemeForest requirement. This ensures that when you change a theme you don’t lose your data. In a word, themes = looks, plugins = functionality.

Important:
If you have updated to WordPress 5, please make sure to update your theme.

If you are using a version of a theme that was published before the release of WordPress 5, please note that it does not support WordPress 5, and needs to be updated. Basically, the version of the theme you are using was created when WordPress 5 did not exist, so the theme could not be tested and made compatible with it.

To use WordPress 5, please be sure to be running:
Storyteller 1.4 or newer
Bild 1.2 or newer
Essentialist 1.2 or newer
Stills 1.2 or newer
Narrator 1.2 or newer

To find out which version of a theme you are using, please go to Admin Panel > Appearance > Themes. Click the theme image, and see the version number near the theme name.

To update a theme, please go to your ThemeForest Downloads page and obtain the latest version. Then install it in the regular WordPress fashion (deactivate and remove the old theme, install the new one, install/update the required plugins).

    Hello Tiffany,

    1. Can you please elaborate on this?

    Do you mean that you have created a ‘Stills Gallery’ block in the Admin Panel, added pictures to it, they are being displayed in the editor and not being displayed on the front end?

    If so, please send your WP Admin credentials to pavel [at] mauer.co and I will take a look at what might be causing this issue.

    2. You can hide the ‘Other works’ block in ‘Theme Options’. You can as well change the layout of this block, and tweak the number of projects that are shown there. Please go to ‘Theme Options’ and see the following settings:

    Click to enlarge

    3. As for the fonts in the desktop browser and in the mobile browser not being the same, can you please send a link to a page where you are experiencing this? Does this also happen when you are viewing the demo site at stills.mauer.co?

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    Hi Deborah,

    You can achieve this in the new version of Stills by adding the following code to the end of your function.php file just before the closing ?> (see screenshot).

    function mauer_stills_custom_dequeues() {
    	wp_dequeue_script('photoswipe');
    	wp_dequeue_script('photoswipe-ui-default');
    	wp_dequeue_script('mauer-stills-gallery-photoswipe-builder');
    	wp_dequeue_style('photoswipe');
    	wp_dequeue_style('photoswipe-default-skin');
    }
    add_action('wp_print_scripts', 'mauer_stills_custom_dequeues', 100);

    function mauer_stills_custom_inline_scripts_and_styles() {
      if (wp_script_is('jquery', 'done')) { ?>
    	<script type="text/javascript">
    		jQuery(function($) {
    			$(document).ready(function(){
    				$(".mauer-stills-gallery-pswp-big-img-link").removeAttr('href')
    				$(".mauer-stills-gallery-pswp-big-img-link").click(function(e){e.preventDefault();});
    			});
    		});
    	</script>
    	<style>
    		.mauer-stills-gallery-pswp-big-img-link {cursor: default;}
    	</style><?php
      }
    }
    add_action( 'wp_footer', 'mauer_stills_custom_inline_scripts_and_styles' );

    Hello Ashley,

    I believe what’s happening here is that the third project in the screenshot you’ve posted has a thumbnail image with the dimensions that are too small to generate the needed 900×900 square thumb. Please try uploading an image that is at least 900x900px.

    FYI:

    What you might not know is that you don’t need to resize images manually before uploading — WordPress automatically generates all the sizes of an image used in the currently active theme once you upload an image. So if your images’ size is in the range of 1500px (by the bigger side) to 3750px (by the bigger side), just upload them, and WP will automatically create copies in all the needed sizes. If you use pictures which are smaller than 1500px by the bigger size, they may turn out to display incorrectly. And if you use images that are bigger than 3750px by the bigger size, WP may have problems processing them (depending on your server).

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    Actually, support for Jetpack lazy loading has been recently implemented in two of Mauer themes, and it will soon make its way into Narrator as well. Just keep an eye on the changelog (it’s included into the ‘all files..’ ThemeForest archive).

    Hello Angvaliente,

    I appreciate your kind words about the theme. Thank you for using it for your project.

    As for hiding the portfolio titles, this can be achieved with the following line of CSS:

    .portfolio-project-tile .entry-title {display:none;}

    This line will hide the project names in all the layouts that list projects.

    Please add the above code by going to “Appearance” > “Edit CSS” in your Admin Panel. There you can insert the code and click “Publish”.

    If you enjoy the theme (or the support), I invite you to rate it on ThemeForest. This literally takes a moment but means a world to me.

    Nico,

    It seems that I am not able to reproduce the issue that is present in ‘Stills Gallery Test 1’ with any other gallery. Whenever I create another gallery, this does not happen. Disabling none of the plugins seems to fix that. Sometimes deleting images from the gallery one-by-one (I created a separate copy for that) fixes the issue at some point, and sometimes it does not.

    Basically, I’ve run out of ways to catch this error having only WP Admin access. So, can I ask you to provide a copy of your website (as files + database dump)? This way I could install this copy in my local environment and investigate this with the full power of the debugging tools that become available this way. Needless to say, things I do to this independent copy (which won’t even be on the internet), will not affect your running website in any way.

    If you don’t know how to provide a copy like that, you could send me your hosting credentials, and I could take care of creating such a copy myself.

    Kind regards,

    Apspencer,

    Actually the center points of images in each of the rows in the ‘Airy’ layout are aligned. Please see fig. 1 (my red marks may not be 100% precise, but you get the idea).

    It’s easy to test this by adding images of the same aspect ratio and seeing how they align, see fig. 2.

    The highlighted area in your original screenshot actually has nothing to do with the alignment of images (whose centers align as shown in fig. 1 and fig. 2). What you have shown is a by-product of adding the text part to the images of different aspect ratios in this particular grid layout. However, the center points of the images always align despite the padding.

    Yes, you can always try it. Just to make myself clear: both themes you mentioned are coded according to WP standards, and I’m sure the Modulobox is coded according to those standards as well. So things should work. However, you might need to tweak the looks (which would require custom coding). Cheers.

    Hello Adsausage,

    I would say the best way to have your single images appear and act the same way as the images in the galleries would be to create one-image galleries.

    As for the Modulobox plugin, I would really stick with using the galleries that come with the theme (and just create one-image galleries as suggested above), because, I truly believe that the fewer plugins (and less bulk) there is — the better.

    However, I assume that Modulobox should work with Narrator and Storyteller. Just disable the gallery plugins that come with these themes (‘Mauer Storyteller Gallery’ or ‘Mauer Narrator Gallery’, respectively) and fire up Modulobox.

    Please mind that you will need to perform additional styling customizations to make Modulobox galleries look the same way as the Native ones (e.g. in Narrator Modulobox galleries will not be wider than the text columns as are the original galleries, etc.).

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    Imokya,

    I’ve taken a look at your website.

    Your child theme is not update-proof which leads to you using the old code when you update the theme. In general, the child theme is configured very badly.

    You override the whole functions.php file. This leaves you forever stuck with the code you doubled. And when you update the theme, you continue to use the old code because you have overridden everything. Please only override the functions you need to override, not all of them. FYI: all functions in this theme are pluggable.

    Also, if you want to add a script to your website, it’s a really bad idea to override the footer file and drop the code there (Wechat script in this case). This takes the script outside the WordPress loading sequence and can break other scripts on your website. It also leaves you forever stuck with the old footer code.

    Do I understand it right that you created the child theme for the following?
    1. Add custom CSS styles.
    2. Add custom JavaScript.

    If so, please let me know and I’ll provide instructions on how to do that in an update-proof way.

    Nico, Imokya,

    Lazy loading support has been included into Stills. All the images are now being given placeholders of the same aspect ratio as the actual images that will appear in these placeholders. This enables to keep the layout consistent while lazy loading (which is the main challenge while making a website with dynamically-sized images lazy-loading-ready). The spinner hiding has been shifted to happen earlier in the loading sequence, which also contributes to serving the page to the user faster.

    The lazy loading is powered by the Jetpack Lazy Images module. As you probably know, Jetpack has been developed and is maintained by Automattic — the actual company behind WordPress itself. So it is well supported and is sure to stick around. I don’t see any reason to use any other lazy loading plugin and invite you to switch to Jetpack lazy loading. I recommend removing the lazy loading plugins you may have previously installed.

    You can see Stills lazy loading in action on the demo website here.

    To have lazy loading on your website, please do the following:

    1. Update the Stills theme (get the new version from the downloads page, deactivate and remove the old theme, install the new one, install/update the needed plugins).

    2. Go to Admin Panel > Jetpack > Settings and turn on ‘Enable Lazy Loading for Images’.

    I’ve also included this info into the User Guide (basically, it’s pretty much the same as here).

    Kind regards,

    Hi Imokya,

    As for installing/updating the plugins when you update the theme: I’ve actually mentioned this in a reply to the rating you left on ThemeForest, as apparently the problem you mentioned there with WordPress 4 was also caused by the required plugins not having been installed/updated.

    Once you activate the new version of the theme in your Admin Panel, you will see a message similar to this:

    The text in the message may vary depending on whether you need to just update, or also install plugins.

    You need to click the “Begin…” link and install/update the plugins. Otherwise, the theme won’t work as expected.

    If you are wondering why parts of the functionality are contained in plugins created by the same author who created the theme (‘Mauer Stills Gallery’ and ‘Mauer Stills Portfolio’), this is a ThemeForest requirement. Basically, it ensures that when you change a theme you don’t lose your data. In a word, themes are for looks, plugins are for functionality.

    As for lazy loading, to enable Jetpack lazy loading you need to go to Admin Panel > Jetpack > Settings and turn on “Enable Lazy Loading for Images”:

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    P.S.
    Let me check the mobile layout issue (I believe you are talking about the front page) later today and get back to you about this.

    Hello Rgates,

    You can not update the ACF Pro plugin on your own because its license does not allow that — if you got a copy of the plugin, as part of a theme. You’d need to directly buy a license for ACF PRO to be able to update it, however, the changes in the latest version of the ACF PRO are really minor and don’t affect the performance of the theme in any way. So I would not say it’s worth the hassle.

    Still, if you’d like to have the latest version of ACF Pro, please let me know and I’ll send it to you.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    Hi Michael,

    Without-custom-coding approach could be smth like this:

    You could leave two portfolio categories (and kill all the rest): Commissioned and Personal. Then you could hide the portfolio categories menu (the little grey capitals). And you would put two links on the main menu: Commissioned and Personal. They would lead to yoursite.com/comissioned and yoursite.com/personal (without the ‘/proj-cat’ in the middle). In essence they would be filters for the main page. The ‘Sincere..’ words would be the same on both pages. And ‘Other projects’ at the end of single project pages would have projects from both categories.

    Having a custom post type with its own taxonomies sounds like a better solution.

    I’m not exactly sure what you mean by ‘respective templates’. I would say that they would look the same as the existing ones, but you would be able to, say, use ‘Airy’ grid for Commissioned and ‘Masonry’ for Personal, and have different ‘Sincere..’ texts for commissioned and personal. I’ve emailed you an estimate on that to the address with which you are registered on this forum.

    Hello,

    I would suggest using the footer (‘copyright’) text for this. Let’s say you have created the Imprint and Data Privacy pages and given them the following URLs: yoursite.com/imprint and yoursite.com/data-privacy. You can go to Theme Options and place the following string into the ‘Copyright text’ field:

    Sebastos. <a href='/imprint'>Imprint</a>, <a href='/data-privacy'>Data Privacy</a>.

    This would result in the following on the front end:

    The Imprint and Data Privacy in the above picture would be links leading to respective pages. Please let me know if you’d like to make them more distinguishable as links by adding an underline.

    I would suggest that it may not be reasonable to create an actual footer menu for these complimentary pages and the above would work better — maintaining the minimalist feel of the theme.

    Hello Im.Xingway,

    You actually do not have to install WP5 to work with the new Stills (1.2). It’s backward-compatible with WP4. I have just installed the new Stills on WP4.9 and re-rested it. It’s working as expected.

    What may have escaped your attention is that once you activate the updated theme, you need to install/update the required plugins. including the new ‘Mauer Stills Gallery’ plugin. Upon theme activation, there is a message in the Admin Panel similar to this:

    As for the lazy loading, I actually did not mention which particular release would include that. I’m working on it right now, and will release soon.

    Please excuse my late reply. There has been a family situation. I’m back at work now, and will reply much faster.

    Hello Apspencer,

    You can actually do that by adding the ‘show_count’=>1 argument when calling wp_list_categories() — see spec.

    Just like that:

    enlarge

    It’s best to do such modifications in a child theme, so that they don’t get overwritten when updating the theme. Stills is child-theme-ready.

    You will also need to add the following CSS:

    .portfolio-categories a {margin-right: 0;}
    .portfolio-categories .cat-item {margin-right: 43px;}
    @media (min-width: 500px) and (max-width: 767px) {.portfolio-categories a {margin-right: 0;}}
    @media (min-width: 500px) and (max-width: 767px) {.portfolio-categories .cat-item {margin-right: 30px;}}
    @media (max-width: 499px) {.portfolio-categories a {margin-right: 0;}}
    @media (max-width: 499px) {.portfolio-categories .cat-item {margin-right: 24px;}}

    You can add the CSS by going to Appearance > Edit CSS.

    Dear Benjamin,

    From what I can see, you did install the ‘Mauer Stills Gallery’ plugin, however you did not install the new version of the theme — Stills 1.2. Your website is currently running Stills 1.1 — see proof. This leads to the absense of the gallery styles, which messes up the layout.

    Please do the following:

    1. In your Admin Panel go to ‘Appearance’ > ‘Themes’, click the theme thumbnail and see what version it says you are running.

    2. Update the theme to 1.2, if the previous step showed you were running 1.1. During the update, please update the bundled plugins (e.g. ACF Pro).

    3. If step one showed you were running 1.2: if you use any caching (plugins, Cloudflare, etc.), purge the caches and see if the issue persists.

    Please follow up here when you perform these actions.

    Hello Mypijika,

    To alter the width please do the following:

    In your Admin Panel go to ‘Appearance’ > ‘Edit CSS’.

    Paste the following code in the field. Feel free to change 85% to the values of your choice.

    /* 'big latest' featured image width on blog page */
    .post-card.big .entry-thumb-wrapper {
    	width: 85%;
    	margin: 0 auto;
    }

    /* featured image width on single page */
    .entry-full .entry-thumb {
    	width: 85%;
    	margin: 0 auto;
    }

    Click ‘Publish’.

    It’s better to not alter the files of the theme directly. Because this way the changes will be lost when you update the theme. The way that I’ve laid out above is update-proof.

    BTW, there has recently been an Essentialist update that introduced WordPress 5 and Gutenberg support. I invite you to update the theme. When you do that, please make sure to also update the bundled plugins and install the ‘Mauer Essentialist Gallery’ plugin (also bundled with the theme).

    It’s mostly cosmetic.

    Hi Daniel,

    It’s great to know that the theme is serving you well. By the way an update has been released on January 29th (ver. 1.21). This update introduced full support for Gutenberg and WP5, including the ‘Narrator Gallery’ Gutenberg block.

    I invite you to update if you haven’t already. When updating the theme, be sure to also update the bundled plugins (e.g. ACF). This is vital for proper functioning of the theme.

    As for your points:

    1. Having a full-width image would actually require quite a substantial code and design customization (not included into support according to ThemeForest rules). You could contract a WP expert for this customization at Envato Studio or Codeable.io.

    2. Please adjust the WP setting responsible for the number of posts per page. It is located in Admin Panel > Settings > Reading > Blog pages show at most.

    If you are using a 3 column layout, it makes sense to use a number that is divisible by 3. For instance, the demo homepage (which has a 3-column layout), uses 9 for ‘Blog pages show at most’.

    You can find a bit more info about this in the Recommendations section of the User Guide (it’s right at the end).

    2. Make sure you are using the latest version of Jetpack (you can go to Dashboard > Updates to see if there’s an update available).

    3. Make sure you are using the latest version of WordPress (5.1.1 as of now).

    4. When logged in to the Admin Panel, try inserting the following address in the browser address bar: YOURSITE/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing and see if the sharing options are available.

    Storyteller:

    Narrator:

    If you are using older versions of the themes, which were published before the release of WordPress 5, you might run into problems like these. WP5 was a major update, and older themes code needed to be aligned with the new WP.

    Please update the themes, and let me know if you still experience these issues.

    You can achieve that by doing the following: please go to the Theme Options, set ‘Blog page layout’ to ‘Masonry’, and click ‘Update’.

    Then, add square featured images to your posts, and they will be displayed as squares on list pages such as the blog homepage.

    Also, if you want to prevent the square featured images to be cut on single post pages, it’s a good idea to provide separate featured images for post lists (square), and for single posts (horizontal). The latter can obviously be a differently cut version of the former. Please see section “8. Separate featured images for post lists” of the User Guide.

    To add a gallery link to the site menu (whether as a top level item, or a sub-item), you need to use the “Custom links” option:

    Just place the URL of your gallery there and give the menu item a title.

    Basically, it is the same process as adding the external links that you now have in the “Portfolio” menu item.

    There is no simple customisation that would allow that. I would say that it may be a good idea to break the “Visions” gallery into two or three galleries. This would make the “Portraits” filter have more than one item, and it would make each of these galleries less overwhelming (as the current “Visions” gallery has 100 images).

    Out-of-the-box the theme only provides the older/newer posts navigation with buttons (as seen in the demo). If you would like to customize that (please mind that customizations are not included into support according to ThemeForest rules), you would either have to contract somebody to do that on a platform like Envato Studio, Codeable.io, or Freelancer.com. Or you could try to find a plugin that does it in the plugin repository. Going with a plugin might also require some coding to blend the solution into the theme.

    Paul
